Why Did My CPA Increase Suddenly?

CPA increases are one of the most common panic moments in Meta advertising. The account was working, now it is not. Before touching anything, understand what actually drives CPA and where the breakdown most likely is.


What is actually happening

CPA is a product of three inputs: CPM ÷ (CTR × CVR). When CPA rises, one of those three degraded. The most common cause is creative fatigue. Meta's own data shows conversion rates drop 60% after people see the same creative four times. The algorithm has delivered to the most receptive segment of your audience. What remains responds less. The second most common cause is a post-click drop -- something changed on the landing page or in the conversion funnel. Stable CTR but rising CPA is almost always a page load issue, a broken mobile form, or an offer mismatch between ad and landing page. Targeting changes and seasonal auction pressure are the third and fourth causes, and they are significantly less common than the first two.

⚑ Most common wrong move
Changing targeting. CPA increases are almost never a targeting problem. Changing audiences resets the learning phase and discards the conversion history the campaign accumulated. The actual cause stays unfixed while you start from zero.

What to do
1Check frequency. If above 6-7 on cold audiences, creative fatigue is the cause. Add a new creative to the existing ad set -- do not pause or duplicate.
2Check week-over-week CTR trend. If CTR is holding but CPA is rising, the problem is post-click. Test your landing page on a mobile device right now.
3Check page load speed. Google PageSpeed Insights, mobile test. Above 3 seconds = 50%+ abandonment before the page is seen.
4Check whether any structural edits were made in the last 48 hours -- audience, bid, placement, budget above 20%. Any of these reset the learning phase and cause a temporary CPA spike.
5Check seasonality. Q4, major sale events, and the end of Meta's weekly optimisation cycle (Saturdays) inflate CPMs across the board regardless of account quality.
