Meta ads plan · estimated

How Calm should run Meta ads.

The opposite of Duolingo. Where the owl grows on organic and should spend less, Calm's engine is paid acquisition, so the whole plan is install economics done well.

Our read

Paid is the engine, so the engine has to be efficient. Calm acquires through performance, with Meta as the main channel and hundreds of creatives running at once. That is the opposite of an organic-led app, so the discipline is different: this account lives or dies on install economics. Two things decide it. First, the creative, and here Sleep Stories, not meditation, are the proven converting hook, especially with a celebrity voice attached. Second, the maths, because the app store takes roughly 30% of the first-year subscription, so a naive cost-per-install target quietly hides an unprofitable customer.

So the paid-social job is app installs bought against a trial-start and a subscription that clears the store tax, not raw installs. Lead with problem-aware sleep and anxiety hooks, front-load the budget on the January window when the whole world resolves to sleep better, and retarget the installed-but-not-subscribed through the free-to-paid step where the money is actually made.

The economics we assumed
Annual price
$80/yr
Paid subscribers
4M+
App-store take
~30%
Peak season
January
Real: annual plan around $80/yr ($16.99/mo, $499 lifetime); 4M+ paying subscribers (2022); $2B valuation (2020); founded 2012; a documented, Meta-heavy paid-acquisition engine. The app store takes ~30% of first-year subscription revenue (15% after), which every CAC target must clear. Retention and conversion specifics are wellness-app benchmarks, not Calm's data.
Set it up
Main campaign
App Promotion, optimised for install then trial-start, not raw install. The free-to-Premium upsell happens in-app, so paid buys the qualified installer, and the subscription is the number that matters.
Objective
App installs, with the mobile SDK and Conversions API for App sending install, trial-start and subscribe events back cleanly.
Targeting
Broad. Problem-aware creative qualifies the audience better than interest stacks. Retarget installed-not-subscribed and lapsed trials.
Placements
Advantage+ (all placements). Reels and Stories carry the Sleep Story and celebrity-voice creative.
Payback
Model CAC net of the ~30% app-store take, not gross subscription price. A cost-per-install that looks fine on gross revenue can be a loss once the store's cut comes out.
Seasonality
Front-load the January resolution window and secondary stress peaks. This is a demand-timed category; concentrate spend where intent spikes.
The first three weeks
1
Lead with sleep, not meditation. Launch problem-aware Sleep Story creative, celebrity voice where you have it, as App Promotion optimised to trial-start. Wire install, trial and subscribe events first.
2
Read net of the store tax. Judge cost per subscribe against revenue after the ~30% app-store cut, not gross. Retarget installed-not-subscribed, which is where the free-to-paid conversion is won.
3
Concentrate on the season. Front-load January and scale the celebrity and pain-point hooks that clear payback. Sequence retargeting through the funnel rather than spending flat all year.
Creative angles

Sell the problem, cast a voice. The strongest install creative is a sleep fix with a face on it. The two concepts below are Calm's proven registers.

VideoSleep Story
"Fall asleep to a bedtime story read by a voice you know."
Sleep Stories convert better than meditation, and a celebrity narrator is the scroll-stop. The famous voice earns the install; the free trial lowers the risk of trying.

"Can't switch your brain off at night?"
Problem-aware hooks beat brand-awareness for install intent. Naming the exact 2am feeling, the racing mind, pulls in the person actively looking for a fix tonight.

How we built this plan

We modelled this from Calm's public pricing, subscriber and valuation figures plus wellness-app benchmarks for churn and payback. The retention and conversion specifics are estimates, not Calm's data, meant to show what a paid-acquisition-led app plan looks like on Meta and why the app-store take changes the maths.
